RESCUE DOGS & CATS
What to think about before you rehome a dog or cat...
Rehoming a dog or cat can be a wonderfully rewarding experience, but here at City Tails we know it can also be quite daunting.
Drawing on her experience as a rehomer and foster carer for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Sophie is on hand to offer advice and help to settle any nerves you may have at any stage in the rehoming process.
Questions to think about before rehoming a pet...
How much time can you give to your new pet?
In general dogs will prefer more company during the day than cats. If you work all day, you may need to think about making arrangements with a dog walker to help break up the day whilst you are at work, especially during the settling in period as your rescue pet gets used to his/her new home.
Listen to the advice of the rehoming centre, some cats seek human company too and so may prefer not to be left too long during the day.
What breed suits your home environment?
It is so easy to fall for a dog or cat based on their cute looks alone, but take the time to read up on breed characteristics and traits before you make your final decision. The happiest rescue dog or cat will be one that fits perfectly with your family and home set up.
What age is best for you?
Puppies and kittens are adorable to look at, but don't forget they take more time and work at home. You will need to make time for feeds, socialising, toilet training etc. So don't be afraid to rehome a slightly older pet that may already have learnt some wonderful behaviours and had some previous training.
Will the new pet spend much time around children?
Whether you have children of your own, or spend a lot of time with friend's children, have a good think about how much time your new pet WILL spend around children and be honest and open with the rehoming centre staff. All rehoming centrs have excellent knowledge on the animals in their care, and if they do not think a dog is suitable to be around children that much, there will be a good reason. So wait a little longer and your perfect companion will come along.
